At Dubuc Opticiens, we have the perfect eyeware for your babies from 0 to 5 years old.

The ABC of glasses for babies from 0 to 5 years old.

Your pediatrician probably recommended that your child see an ophthalmologist specialized for children. There are very few ophthalmologists in Quebec and even fewer pediatric ophthalmologists. Therefore, these professionals are very busy and it is difficult to obtain an appointment with them. After sometimes several months of waiting, you will be able to see the doctor, who in most cases will rapidly give you a prescription for glasses. Many questions will be raised and the doctor probably won’t have time to answer all of them. You must trust the doctor’s expertise.

Parents generally have tons of questions on their mind when they first walk in here with their child and prescription from the ophthalmologist. Again, you must trust our expertise. After having spent several years filling out ophthalmic prescriptions for babies and young children, we are able to answer most questions that you may have. We are also able to contact the doctor directly if anything is unclear or if we require further explanation.

You will be faced with several challenges when picking out the right frames for a young child.
A child’s facial features differ from an adult’s facial features. In an attempt to please the parents, numerous brands, which are generally made in China, have the bad tendency to try and imitate adult frames. It is a big mistake. A pediatric ophthalmologist wouldn’t prescribe glasses to babies, toddlers and young children if it weren’t a necessity. Eyeglasses are often needed for the child to develop his vision correctly. To correct a child’s vision rapidly and appropriately, it is necessary for him to look through the lenses and not over them. Fashion and looks must remain secondary.

A pair of glasses rests on the nose and is held in its place with the help of branches which wrap around the ears. It just so happens that babies and young children have not yet formed their cartilage. A kid simply hasn’t developed the nose that is needed for glasses to hold and more often than not, they end up sliding down to the tip of their nose. To prevent such a situation from occurring, this reality must first and foremost be taken into account when picking out the frames. A pair of glasses for young children must be adjusted with great care. The bridge must have the right size. Branches must have the right length, not too short, nor too long. The frames must be robust, solid, flexible and of very good quality because kids tend to torture them in unconceivable ways. These restrictions however do not stop you from being able to choose from a great selection of beautiful and colorful frames for babies and young children.

In the busy parent’s best interest as well as for the child who is wearing the glasses, you want to make sure that those do not constantly break. You must keep in mind that even with our best intentions paired with the best quality in the world, it is expected that you will have to come see us again to have the glasses readjusted, straightened and sometimes even repaired. It is our responsibility and our pleasure. Also, there are usually no additional costs for repairs and adjustments.

Our goal is to install prescription lenses that are impact resistant and as thin and light as possible to fit into the frames that you have selected. All of our lenses come with an anti-reflective treatment, UV protection as well as the best scratch resistant coating that you can find on the market. We also carry sunglasses, with or without prescription lenses, for babies and young children.

In general, glasses for babies and young children are relatively expensive as the quality is not to be neglected. We offer packages ranging from $349 to $500 for a full pair of glasses, including the frames and lenses. Prescription glasses are not taxable.

We have our own laboratory and the glasses are crafted on site. This means that we can also replace the lenses in your child’s frames in only one visit. We have a lot of spare parts in stock which avoids you from making several trips if a repair is needed. All of our frames come with a full and unconditional warranty of at least 2 years.

Our favorite collection, MINIMA, is made in France and comes with a 10 year warranty. The lenses come with a 2-year warranty covering all damages, with the exception of scratches which are inevitable with babies but which generally do not affect their vision.

When you walk inside Dubuc Opticiens, you will always find a certified professional with several years of experience in children eyewear. We offer a great selection of products for babies and young children and are very comfortable working with this clientele as we have many young customers.

If your child does not have a significant eye problem, he doesn’t necessarily need to meet with a pediatric ophthalmologist. We also offer an in-house eye exam service. Our optometrist is able to perform eye exams on children as young as 5 years old. Eye exams are covered by the Régie de l’Assurance Maladie du Québec for children of 18 years of age and under.
